Bobby Wade Young, 79, of Oxford, NC, died Friday, June 19, 2020, after a battle with sarcoma. He was born in Rolesville, NC, on October 16, 1940, to Clyde D. Young and Emma Holden Young.
Bob served Granville County for many years as a member and chairman of the Board of Education and a member of the Board of Commissioners. He worked as a tobacco farmer, a farm equipment dealer, and an insurance agent. During his several decades in Granville County agriculture, he became known as a mentor and adviser to local farmers. He served Farmers Mutual Insurance Company as an agent beginning in 1983, and as president from 1993 to 2020.
He was a member of Enon Baptist Church, holding various leadership positions, including the Board of Deacons. Bob was a valuable member of the Granville County Shrine Club, giving much of his attention to the reverse raffle fundraisers twice each year. Additionally, he was an active investor and observer of the business scene, providing wise counsel to many friends and family members on financial matters.
Bob enjoyed world travel and spending time at his vacation home in North Myrtle Beach, SC. His leadership extended there, as well, as a board member of the Crescent Keys Homeowners Association from its inception in 2005, and as board president for many of those years.
He graduated from Rolesville High School in 1959 and maintained close friendships among classmates throughout life. Bob also completed two years of business studies at East Carolina College, where he met his future wife, Harriett Daniel.
Bob is survived by his wife, Harriett Daniel Young; son Thomas W. Young and his wife, Kristen; son Ronald D. Young and his wife, Karen; and siblings Douglas Young, Betty Abernethy, and Linda Barnes. He is also survived by a loving extended family and many close friends. Bob is predeceased by an infant daughter, Debra Leigh Young.
